One of my hopes for the trip was to see Kiwi in the wild. This is difficult, as they are nocturnal, shy, and their numbers have been decimated by introduced predators. I signed up for a guided walk with a local group that has access to private property where the Kiwi is often found. We were very lucky, they often see 1 or 2 birds, we saw 5. Even better, this one walked up and pecked at my shin before running off. I swear I heard him say "You're it!" as he left, but I could be wrong about that.
