Black-hooded Antshrike

Black-hooded Antshrike

The New World tropics are filled with birds the "ant" in their names. There are Antwrens, Antvireos, Antpittas, Ant-Tanagers, Antshrikes, and Antbirds. Surprisingly, it is not that these birds eat ants. What the birds do is follow army ants as they move through the forest. As insects or other animals try to escape the ants, they become prey for mixed flock of birds that accompany the swarm.
